Call for Proposals: Prospects and Perils for African Democracy
Afrobarometer and the Program on African Social Research (Pasiri) invite proposals for
our second Junior Scholars’ Workshop to be held in Accra, Ghana, June 22-24, 2022.
Recent coups in West Africa and elsewhere have again demonstrated the precarity of
democracy in Africa. Even as surveys reveal that the majority of Africans prefer
democratic rule, African political elites seem incapable of entrenching substantive
democratic institutions.
For this workshop, we welcome proposals from scholars working on the trajectory of
democracy across Africa’s 54 countries. What are the prospects for substantive
democracy in Africa? What role has the COVID pandemic played in undermining or
promoting democratic rule? How are populist politicians and social movements
transforming the nature of democracy? What about the military and other violent
actors? What impact has foreign investment and economic growth had on
democratization? What role, if any, for the international community?
Priority for the Junior Scholars Workshops is given to scholars based at African
institutions, though all proposals will be considered for participation. Scholars interested
in using Afrobarometer data in their research are especially encouraged to apply. Costs
for selected participants will be covered and all participants will receive a small
honorarium. To be considered for participation, please send a 300 word proposal to
africansocialresearch@gmail.com no later than March 8, 2022. Be sure to include your
current degree or appointment status and institutional affiliation (where relevant).
